Community Benefits

Coastal communities (within 5 km of the coast) make up over 40% of the total population of Scotland (Source: The James Hutton Institute, Scotland’s Coastal Assets) and are undergoing significant shifts in population distributions and key economic sectors. Salamander innovates to ensure this large population continues to successfully coexist with, and benefit from, offshore wind buildout.

The Salamander Offshore Wind Farm will deliver a package of innovations aimed at ensuring that future commercial-scale offshore wind development in Scotland can enhance coexistence and maximise the benefits flowing to local communities. This coexistence will be critical to ensuring the smooth development of ScotWind projects. The support of local communities is contingent on projects demonstrating an understanding of, and positive intent towards, those communities.

New Opportunities

As projects of this scale represent massive capital investment into local areas, there is considerable opportunity for job creation along the North Sea coast.

The Salamander Offshore Wind Farm will support local job creation at all stages, by actively encouraging local content in our supply chain

A range of supply chain opportunities for floating offshore wind will be rolled out as the project progresses, from initial consultation and survey work, to port and road infrastructure development, to construction and installation. Ongoing Operation & Maintenance (O&M) contracts will also become active post construction. Local suppliers will be encouraged to participate in all stages and local content will be acknowledged and scored in tendering processes to continually encourage this participation.

Social and Environmental Benefits

Large scale regional investment such as this will help to promote strong socio-economic growth in Scottish east coast communities, stimulating local economies, leading to a brighter future for generations to come.

In addition, social and environmental participation with the project at a local level is actively encouraged. Local awareness initiatives will be promoted by the project team on an ongoing basis and we are happy to collaborate with local groups on social and environmental projects as part of our stakeholder engagement strategy.

Education

The Salamander Offshore Wind Farm considers education and engagement on marine renewable energy to be an integral part of the fight against climate change and development of the blue economy.

Moreover, we recognise the opportunity that local and national renewables development brings in providing access and opportunity to access Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) learning. We were delighted to sign a learning partnership with Peterhead Academy in February 2024, committing to working with the school to lend our knowledge and time to support students in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) learning.

The project team are pursuing additional opportunities for educational outreach and would be happy to hear from local initiatives.

The animation ‘The Seagull and the Storm’ was developed by Irish animator Jane Lee from Paper Plane Animations as a component of the Salamander Offshore Wind Farm stakeholder and community engagement plan. The story is centered around a dialogue between a Seagull and a young girl, named Roisin Renewables, a role model for young girls in STEM. However, the animation also has wide-ranging appeal. The animation focuses on creating awareness of floating offshore wind among school children.
